Natural Cleaners, Good for the Environment
And Good for Your Business
There is a growing demand from cleaning customers for services that use non toxic cleaners.
Using these types of products can be a great way for you to appeal to these customers and to
stand out from the crowd in general.
I don't know too much about natural household cleaners myself but Bill Melville is
an expert. He has a cleaning service where he uses environmentally safe, non toxic cleaners
both for the home cleaning side of his business and his commercial accounts. Bill was nice
enough to help me with the information for this page.
A Note From Bill
One of the most important reasons my clients hire me is because I use safe-for-the
environment, green cleaning products. They are amazed when I demonstrate how tough the
cleaner can be as I rub dirt and grime from a kitchen cabinet face and how gentle it can
be when I rub it on my hands and face. My main cleaning agent is a product called, xxxxxxx.
xxxxxxx contains no phosphates, chlorine, borates, or fragrance; and it has a PH factor of 6.5
(equal to human skin) so it's both good for the environment and good for you.
Many of my residential clients have children and are concerned about the toxic residue
and odor that other cleaning products leave. One of my commercial clients produces chocolate
treats, he was very impressed with the fact that the cleaners I use do not have an odor
(a requirement in the food processing industry).
There have been scientific studies conducted by the EPA that have found that many well
known cleaning products can cause serious illness to the people using them as well as the
people living in the home where the products were used. Many people are allergic or get
chemical reactions from household cleaners.
I used to get severe headaches, itchy eyes, breathing problems and chronic sinusitis
after cleaning with store bought cleaners. Since I've been using xxxxxxx I have not had
any problems at all. So when I went into the cleaning business I decided to exclusively
use xxxxxxx for my sake as well as my clients.
Along with all the health and environment advantages of using green cleaning products
here are several more...
Economy
One quart of xxxxxxx’s xxxxxxx, which is my primary cleaner, when diluted as directed,
will produce 190 gallons of powerful cleaner. One quart of xxxxxxx (xxxxxxx’s germicide),
which I use to disinfect around toilets, bathtubs and other places germs may flourish, will
produce up to 64 gallons of cleaner. One quart of xxxxxxx (xxxxxxx’s industrial strength
cleaner), which I use to strip wax from floors, will make up to 32 gallons of cleaner.
xxxxxxx, in the prescribed dilutions, cleans hard surfaces, furniture, enameled
woodwork, walls, floors, ceilings, glass, mirrors, appliances, cars, you name it,
xxxxxxx will clean it.
Biodegradibility
Today's artificial cleaning products can take up to 200 years to degrade, but xxxxxxx’s
xxxxxxx degrades within a few hours to a few days.
Effectiveness
xxxxxxx makes water 100 times wetter, so it makes cleaning easier with less work.
xxxxxxx kills more bacteria, viruses and fungus than any other germicide on the market.
Basic-I penetrates, emulsifies, and removes grease, oil and wax. Liquid At-Ease tough, but
gentle cleanser cleans, scours, and polishes without scratching.
When Bill says "xxxxxxx makes water 100 times wetter" he means that it reduces the surface
tension of water so that it doesn't bead up on the things you want to clean. Instead it
spreads evenly over the surface, greatly increasing its ability to remove dirt and grease.
Two Last Points from Bill
There are two other benefits you will get using xxxxxxx in your cleaning business:
You can become an independent distributor, get the products at the distributors rate, and sell to your clients. Some of my clients are interested in purchasing xxxxxxx's products (natural cleaning, laundry concentrates, makeup, vitamins and food supplements). After my cleans, when I leave my invoice, I also leave some xxxxxxx literature with them. Many times I get positive responses, this is a great way to add more income to your cleaning business with very little effort.
xxxxxxx, our main cleaning product, is also a soil enrichment agent. xxxxxxx actually sells
xxxxxxx to the farming industry in 30 gallon drums for this purpose. So I always ask my
residential clients if they have any dry spots on their lawns or a plant or bush that may
not be doing to well because of draught conditions. After I finish mopping, I pour the mop
water on the lawn area or bush the client recommends. Within days the area starts to
rejuvenate. My clients are amazed. I'm sure it also must raise some eyebrows among in the
neighborhood seeing me dumping mop water on someone's lawn!

Note: I got a phone call from the Shaklee legal department the other day, telling me they don't like having third parties mention either their company name or their products by name. I'm not sure why since this whole article says nothing but good things about them and their cleaning products but
the last thing I need is problems with anybody's legal department so I removed all mention of their various cleaning products and them, in the article proper, and replaced them with these things: xxxxxxx - James Nokes, (10/25/07) |

Reading the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) of common cleaning products can be a real eye opener. Below are some of the things that the manufacturers themselves say about their cleaning products. Don't get me wrong, you can use these products safely, if you follow all instructions: use in well ventilated areas, wear gloves, use only in recommended concentration, etc. etc. etc. But isn't it nice to know that there are effective, natural cleaning products you can use instead of harsh, sometimes dangerous chemical cleaners?
can
coat your nasal passages with an oil film and/or reduce your ability to smell
odors. These products often contain Formaldehyde-a highly toxic material that
can irritate eyes, nose, throat, and skin. High exposure can cause nausea, headaches,
nosebleeds, dizziness, memory loss and shortness of breath. Other chemicals
include Phenol, a skin irritant that can cause swelling, burning, and peeling.
High doses of Phenol can also cause cold sweats, convulsions, circulatory collapse,
coma, and even death.
a volatile chemical that can damage your eyes, as well as respiratory tract
and skin irritation.
a strong corrosive with fumes that can irritate or burn the skin, eyes,
and respiratory tract. If ingested, bleach can cause pulmonary edema or vomiting.
Extremely dangerous when mixed with ammonia, as the resulting fumes can be deadly.
often
contains Propylene Glycol, a chemical that can cause nausea, convulsions, slurred
speech, disorientation, and heart and kidney problems when ingested. Other all-purpose
cleaners may contain Sodium Hydroxide, also found in drain cleaners, stain removers,
and bathroom cleaners. A highly reactive chemical, Sodium Hydroxide can react
violently with water and other materials, sometimes generating enough heat to
ignite nearby combustible materials. Other health hazards can include blindness,
scarring, and even death when inhaled in large amounts. Aerosol sprays containing
this chemical can also lead to lung injury.

CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY SHAMPOO:
| designed to overpower stains, these products often use highly toxic materials
to get the job done. Ingredients include Perchlorethylene, a carcinogen that
can damage the liver, kidneys, and nervous system, and Ammonium Hydroxide, which
is extremely irritable to eyes, skin and respiratory passages.
often
contain highly concentrated amounts of chlorine. A leading cause of child poisonings.
often
contains lye, hydrochloric acid or trichloroethane. Lye can burn skin and eyes
and can damage the esophagus and stomach if ingested. Hydrochloric acid is a
corrosive element that can irritate skin, and damage kidneys, liver and digestive
tracts. Trichloroethane is an eye and skin irritant, that can depress the nervous
system and damage liver and kidneys.
many
include Petroleum Distillates, a highly flammable skin irritant, and Phenol
(see Air Fresheners). Some also include Nitrobenzene, a toxic material easily
absorbed through the skin, or Methyl Chloroform, which can cause skin irritation,
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, headache, drowsiness, symptoms
of drunkenness, kidney damage, liver damage, convulsions, and even coma. Other
products contain Hydrocarbon Solvent, which can result in mucous membrane irritation.
Higher concentrations of this chemical can cause headache, dizziness, and nausea.

MOLD
AND MILDEW CLEANERS:
| ingredients often include Sodium Hypochlorite, a corrosive material that can
irritate or burn skin and eyes. In cases of high exposure, can cause fluid to
collect in the lungs, which can lead to coma or death. Many such cleaners also
contain Formaldehyde (see Air Fresheners).
contains
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), a strong irritant to skin and eyes; can also inhibit
reflexes. Ingestion can cause severe tissue damage.
may contain Triclosan, a chemical that, if absorbed through the skin, may contribute
to liver damage.
many contain Sodium or Calcium Hypocrite, highly corrosive
materials that can
irritate or burn skin, eyes or respiratory tract. Other chemicals include Linear
Alkylate Sulfonate, which can be absorbed through the skin and may cause liver
damage, and Sodium Tripolyphosphate, a skin and mucous membrane irritant that
can cause vomiting. Liquid detergents may also contain Ethyl Alcohol, which
can cause coughing, drowsiness, fatigue, and headaches. Stain Removers: Often
contain Petroleum Naphtha, a petroleum distillate and an aspiration hazard that
can damage lungs and cause lung inflammation.
may contain Hydrochloric Acid, a highly corrosive irritant
to both skin and
eyes that can also lead to kidney and liver damage. May also include Hypochlorite
Bleach, another corrosive irritant that can burn eyes, skin and respiratory
tract. Ingestion can lead to pulmonary edema, vomiting or coma. If combined
with other chemicals may result in potentially fatal chlorine fumes. Other chemicals
found in these products can include Phosphoric Acid, an extremely corrosive
material that can cause severe irritation and burns to skin.
