Fleas vs. Vacuums - Fleas Lose!
Scientists have determined that vacuuming kills fleas in all stages of their lives, with an average of 96 percent success in adult fleas and 100 percent destruction of younger fleas.
The studies were conducted on the cat flea, or Ctenocephalides felis, the most common type of flea that people have to deal with.
“No matter what vacuum a flea gets sucked into, it's probably a one-way trip,” said Glen Needham, associate professor of entomology at Ohio State and a co-author of the study.... the damaging effects of the brushes, fans and powerful air currents in vacuum cleaners combine to kill the fleas.

I just very recently discovered kaiscience and I haven't even made a dent in all the articles they have on their site yet but even a very quick review of their material and you can see it's a very impressive source of information about the science of cleaning.
Believe it or not I have a degree in Physics and I was intrigued to read an article they have called, The Science of Dust Buildup by Louis A. Bloomfield, PhD; a Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia. If you ever wondered why thick layers of dust always seem to attach themsleves to the top of fans blades, read his article to find out why.
They have hundreds of articles altogether with titles like: Sick Building Syndrome, The Germiest Jobs and my favorite, Formula for the Future - The Impact of Science-based Cleaning Standards.
I'm going to contact them shortly to see if I can reprint some of their articles for my readers but in the mean time I don't think they will mind if I quote from the first couple of paragraphs of their Formula for the Future article:
Imagine, within 60 seconds, convincing a penny-pinching customer to invest more money in cleaning and, in particular, your services.
Within a minute, you can validate the reasons why management needs to increase the facility's cleaning and maintenance budget.
Would you invest in one word — “science” — if it resulted in improving your cleaning services, implementing more effective techniques, increasing productivity, hiring and retaining the best employees, winning new customers, benchmarking results … all within seconds?
You can see from this one quote why I like their site so much. It shows people how to earn more money by providing a superior, science based cleaning service!
Betco.com
betco.com is a manufacturer of upper end cleaning products, tools and equipment and there are two reasons I want to talk about their site. First, because in my online article, number 78, which I link to below I talk about Green Cleaning Here's what they have to say about their efforts on the green front:
|
Betco has been a leader in Green Cleaning since 1990! With our first Green Earth Chemical Management systems, we started our mission to create a healthy environment. Today, Betco’s Green Earth Cleaning program consists of products, procedures and equipment designed to have a reduced environment impact while maintaining superior performance. This cleaning program is specially designed for a variety of markets where our products can make an immediate impact. Our program is predicated on cleaning for health and the environment. |
As I say in Article 78, Green Cleaning isn't coming. It's here!
The other reason I want to bring Betco to you attention is because they have training videos you can watch online. (If you have a high-speed connection and can view videos using Windows Player Media - which you should be able to do if your computer uses the Windows Operating System.)
Check out their Online Training Videos here's a partial list of their selection:
- Basic Cleaning Techniques
- Slip and Fall Prevention
- Life Cycle of Floor Care
- Life Cycle of Carpet Care
- Restroom Sanitation
- Patient Room Disinfection
- OSHA Hazard Communication
- OSHA Bloodbourne Pathogen
Many of their videos are in Spanish too.
Hear me speak!
The videos above from betco.com and this sound file are examples of the free audio and audiovisual files I'm looking to add to my site. Cleaning businesses have been slow to move into this sort of thing but I intend to locate and add as many free sound files and videos for the cleaning field as I can find.
This is a question posed to Gary Clipperton of NationalProClean. Click on the Play button to hear his comments:
I need help growing my business, can you name some good, basic
strategies I can use to get cleaning accounts?
