Daily Floor Maintenance
(My View)

They make two very good points at the start of this video: One -- that 40% of all cleaning costs go to floor care & Two -- that many people will judge your janitorial service exclusively by how good the floors look.

Despite the importance of floor care many janitors have no real training in proper care for either carpeted or resilient floors. This video takes care of that.

They cover the use of industrial vacuums, tank type vacuums which you carry on your back, standard uprights and hand powered floor sweepers. And for resilient floors they cover dust moping, damp moping, spot moping and wet moping.

I was very impressed with the detailed descriptions of the cleaning techniques used. It's very depressing to watch janitors who don't know what they're doing misuse basic equipment like vacuums, mops and dust mops -- they end up doing about 50% more work than they need to and still not producing as good a result as properly trained staff.

And as always they throw in a lot of useful hints gleaned from their many years of experience. I particularly like their advice about not leaning your hand against the wall when you plug a vacuum or other appliance in. I have seen many accounts where you can easily tell where the janitors plug their vacuums in from the hand prints above the electrical outlets.

While they don't point this out in the video, shame on them, if you see hand prints above the outlets in accounts you are bidding on, point them out to the customer, explain where they came from and promise to eliminate them. This is one of the little tactics you can use to give yourself an advantage when you bid on a job.

As with all of ATV's products this video has high-quality production values and has been updated within the last several years. It has an interactive format in which it asks questions and pauses so the viewer can write down the answer. This allows you to make sure your employees are paying attention. Because of the well written scripts, video demonstrations and the question-and-answer format, viewers of these tapes have a very high level of information retention.
