Nanotechnology Comes to the Cleaning World

 EcoTru®

Brooms, mops, buckets of water, have all been used as cleaning tools, more or less forever. Think about it, we're using much the same equipment as Cinderella did. And, unlike Cinderella, we can't count on our Fairy Godmothers to come along and help out with the scrubbing!

Even vacuums have been in common use for 70 years now. Sometimes it seems like we are in the business that time and technology have forgotten.

But that really is not the case and one of my goals is to highlight ways in which modern technological innovation is creating opportunities for businesses who use these changes to create better, more competitively priced cleaning services, while at the same time, increasing their profits.

In that vein I want to talk about EcoTru® a disinfecting/cleaning compound developed using nanotechnology to create a product that is both highly effective and extraordinarily safe for you and your employees, the homes and businesses you clean, and for the environment as well.

Diana Hoffman, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of EnviroSystems Inc., maker of EcoTru®, a product containing molecule-sized particles of disinfectant that kill bacteria, viruses and mold without harming larger life forms such as human and animal cells.

Ms. Hoffman says the formula uses nanotechnology to attach its emulsion in microscopic amounts to microorganisms and eat through their natural oil-based membranes to kill them. The formula's particles are about one five-hundredth the width of a human hair and carry an electrostatic charge opposite that of most bacteria and viruses.

It's like attaching a bomb to the side of a tank and exploding it, she explains. "Its unique properties let it target bacteria, fungi and viruses without targeting higher life form cells," Ms. Hoffman says. "It's one of the most effective disinfectants on the market."

Frequently Asked Questions about EcoTru®

Q: What is EcoTru®?
A: EcoTru® is a multi purpose, broad spectrum, ready to use, highly effective cleaner and disinfectant for use on the surfaces of inanimate objects. Currently it is the only EPA-registered Tox Category IV disinfectant product in the US. This means there are no harmful dermal (skin), ocular (eyes), inhalation (breathing), or ingestion (swallowing) effects when using EcoTru®. The product is not required to carry any precautionary statements, except "Keep Out of Reach of Children".

Q: Why does the EcoTru® label say "Keep Out of Reach of Children"?
A: The label "Keep Out of Reach of Children" is a requirement of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on all products it regulates, regardless of toxicity.

Q: How can EcoTru® destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi and yet be safe to humans?
A: Humans and animals have complex mechanisms for metabolizing foreign compounds so these are not toxic to the host. The ability of a person or animal to be unaffected by exposure to foreign compounds is the safety factor by which toxicology defines whether a microbicide (microbe killer) such as EcoTru® is toxic or not. In the case of EcoTru®, the toxicology studies show that there is no effect on the animals' ability to maintain cellular function and to regenerate cells, where as the efficacy studies show that EcoTru® is very effective in eliminating the focus microorganisms.

Q: Where can EcoTru® be used?

A: EcoTru® Cleaner/Disinfectant is effective and recommended for use in kitchens, bathroom surfaces, hospitals, clinics, medical offices, dental offices, veterinary offices, laboratories, industrial clean rooms, nursing homes, ambulances, hotels, restaurants, schools, airplanes, trains, boats, buses, health spas. EcoTru® acts quickly and effectively on medical equipment and beds, surgical carts, counter tops, telephones, furniture, wheelchairs, walkers, sinks, walls, light switches, door knobs, etc. EcoTru® Cleaner/Disinfectant can be used to pre-clean and decontaminate critical and semi-critical medical devices prior to sterilization.

Q: Is EcoTru® flammable?
A: No, EcoTru® is not flammable.

Q: What is the shelf life of EcoTru®?
A: EcoTru® has a shelf life of one year.

Q: Can I pour EcoTru® down the drain?
A: Due to EcoTru®'s safe nature and the significant dilution level, no hazardous waste abatement procedures are necessary. It is safe to flow into any drainage or water passage systems. Therefore, EcoTru® has no adverse effect on the environment.

Q: We use a 10% sodium hypochlorite solution for disinfection and it's cheap. Why should we consider EcoTru®?
A: Sodium hypochlorite is bleach and while it is cheap, it is a poor disinfectant. It has several other major drawbacks. It is not tuberculocidal. It performs poorly in the presence of organic material, and it has a strong odor. It is damaging and corrosive both to surface materials and instruments. Many people using bleach suffer significant costs in replacing furnishings and instruments which exceed any savings realized through the purchase of this particular solution.

Q: How do we cost justify a more expensive product even if it is everything you say it is?
A: The real cost of a disinfectant has very little to do with its purchase price. Other costs which should be considered are: employee health safety, absenteeism, satisfaction with the products they are using, potential liability from using products that are either dangerous or not effective, and damage to furnishing from using harsh or toxic products.

Q: How does the nanoemulsion technology work in disinfection?
A: Conventional disinfectants must be dissolved in a solvent such as water or alcohol and made to flood—in effect "drown"—the host organism with a toxic chemical. This method of infection control requires a tradeoff. To ensure microorganisms are killed, the toxic chemical must be present at levels that create health and contamination risks. EcoTru® cleans and disinfects without these risks.

And for Heaven's Sake -- Let Your Customers Know

And your employees too. Everybody wants a clean environment and nobody wants to be exposed to toxic or just plain smelly or unpleasant cleaning products. So let them know. You can write up a simple description of EcoTru's benefits using this article.

You can include this write-up in your monthly bill to your clients and mention it (and bring along your write-up) whenever you bid a new job.
